CONTINUOUS FILAMENT WINDING MACHINE

The manufacturing of the GRP pipes on the Continuous Filament Winding Machine is carried out on a continuously reforming mandrel, Which is obtained by winding a steel tape over a horizontal shaft. The steel tape is forced to translate in the axial direction when the mandrel rotates.The materials are applied onto the moving mandrel.

A first layer of polyester film is wound on the mandrel, followed by a surface veil and chopped strand mat. Filament winding of continuous rovings, together with chopped glass, sand, axial reinforcement (if needed) and polyester resin are applied simultaneously. Finally a new layer of surface veil is applied (if required). Hardening of the resin takes place in a curing oven. Then the pipe is automatically cut to desired lengths and finished by the cutting unit calibrating unit.

The diameter of the mandrel can be modified according to requirements of the pipe diameter. The Calibrating, chamfering and cutting operations are automatically carried-out by means of diamond plated tools, placed after the curing oven, on a trolley translating at the same speed of the pipe.

The control and supervision of the production cycle is provided by a computer holding a CNC, which is connected to a PLC. The CNC controls the operation of the filament winding machine through the following parameters:

  • Speed of the mandrel
  • flow of liner resin and catalysts
  • flow of structure resin and catalysts
  • flow of sand or inert material
  • velocity of the glass choppers
  • control of temperature of the pipe in the oven
  • cutting length
  • end machining
  • weight of pipe

    Minimum Pipe length: from 500mm
    Nominal pipe diameters: from 400 to 2400mm
